SharePoint 2013 Upgrade Offers a Chance to Get it Right (GCN)
For many organizations, deploying Microsoft’s SharePoint content management and collaboration software has been an unplanned, underdeveloped, unloved, but not unpopular endeavor, say industry experts. SharePoint entered a lot of public-sector agencies through small, independent workgroups and has grown very rapidly — but in an unstructured manner. Although Microsoft positioned SharePoint as a platform, most users didn’t treat it that way, installing the software more as a stand-alone application, said John Mancini, president of AIIM, a global non-profit association that supports the information management community.
SharePoint 2010 Cheat Sheet (ComputerWorld)
SharePoint has taken the world by storm. As of last year, if Microsoft broke SharePoint’s revenue out as a single entity, it would have created the fifth largest software company in existence, according to Jared Spataro, senior director of SharePoint product management at Microsoft. All told, hundreds of thousands of SharePoint licenses and millions of installations of both the free and the paid enterprise edition exist in the world.
The Year in SharePoint: Looking Back, Planning Forward (CMSWire)
The fun part of every December is to look back at the year and think through all that has happened. Thinking of Moving to Microsoft Office 365: Pros & Cons (B2C)
Chances are, you use Microsoft Office at work, at home, or both. As the current trends have it, just about every type of functional application has a counterpart in the cloud. Get My Business Data on the Cloud! (ZDNet)
If there’s one recent tech service that has been a lifesaver for my small business, it would be cloud storage and syncing. Three years ago I was taking advantage of the bleeding-edge SkyDrive and Mesh from Microsoft and messing around with Dropbox. Since then Microsoft has retooled and merged SkyDrive with Mesh and Dropbox has become a much bigger player, striking up partnerships and making it easy for third parties to plug into their storage. Apple’s iCloud and Google’s Drive have both come on the scene and while Apple is lagging, Google is making a strong case for Drive by intertwining it with many of Google’s services.
Windows 8: New Security Features Explained (Opposing Views)
Let’s get this out of the way: Microsoft’s decision to drastically change the Windows interface for Windows 8 remains highly controversial. But there are benefits for users who make the switch to the new operating system (OS). Number one on that list: the all-new security features that Windows 8 offers.
Windows: It’s Still the Best Name for Windows (Time)
The Verge’s Tom Warren thinks that it’s time for Microsoft to drop the most famous brand name it’s ever created: Windows. At least that’s what the headline to his story says. He’s actually in favor of the company doing away with the Windows name for its mobile products — Windows Phone, presumably, and maybe Windows RT — and is okay with it being done gradually rather than in one immediate big bang.
RIM is Really in Trouble When Even Windows Phone 8 Looks Great (The Register)
RIM has seen its once dominant market position in corporate mobile plummet from a great height in the last couple of years. The Canadian giant has suffered a huge fall in stock price and, more importantly, penetration – currently around eight per cent market share – with continual declines, quarter upon quarter.
