I guess Mondays are a necessary evil but they are not quite as bad when you can start things off with a FREE Slurpee from 7-eleven. Get ‘em while they’re hot cold. While I can’t offer a free drink to everyone I can point you to Bamboo’s free World Clock & Weather Web Part, just one of the many free Web Parts listed by our friends over at SharePoint Reviews. –Chris

Inside SharePoint 2010, Part 1: The Mile-High View (Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite for Windows)
While most readers are likely familiar with the name SharePoint, it’s equally likely that many of you, like me, rarely if ever actually use the product. I aim to change that. Thanks to my testing of the Office 365 service over the past nine months, I’ve become more and more intrigued by this jack-of-all-trades product which, like an old SNL skit, is both a dessert topping and a floor wax, a product so versatile and useful that it defies you to describe it quickly and simply.
Is Google+ a Trojan Horse Into Enterprise IT? (WindowsITPro)
Google+ was released several weeks ago, and early reviews of the service have ranged from gushingly positive (“a smooth, intuitive, and enjoyable experience”) to scathingly negative (“Google’s Facebook clone”). Yet the aggregate tone from the blog and twitter-sphere seems to be cautiously positive, with many early reviewers lauding innovative Google+ features like hangout (group video chat), huddle (group text messaging) and circles (drag-and–drop friend grouping). I finally managed to get access to Google+ earlier today, but haven’t had much time to play with the service yet. Look for more thoughts next week, and I’d love to hear from readers about what you think of Google+.
What’s on Steve Ballmer’s Microsoft Priority List Now? (ZDNet)
Microsoft officials have publicly prided themselves on dabbling in lots of different areas that might someday become Microsoft’s next billion-dollar business. But it seems there’s a new modus operandi in place these days. And I’m curious what Ballmer & Co. now consider to be worthy big bets. A week ago — just before the Fourth of July — Ballmer spoke at the Seattle Rotary club. Besides giving a detailed preview as to what the company’s earnings are expected to be for fiscal 2011 (close to $70 billion in sales and $26 billion to $27 billion in profit), Ballmer shared some other interesting pronouncements. He also made it pretty clear that he isn’t expecting to go anywhere any time soon, despite calls by some outsiders for him to step down as CEO at Microsoft.
Microsoft Squeezes Android With Patent Fees (InformationWeek)
Microsoft has been making agreements with companies to license technology it owns the patents for that are in the Android platform. Microsoft first made big news in early 2010 when it reached an agreement with HTC where the phone maker pays Microsoft $5 for every Android phone it ships. Now Microsoft is trying to get $15 for each handset that Samsung ships. That has to be within a few dollars for what Microsoft charges for a Windows Phone license.
Microsoft vs. Google: Making Sense of Cloud-Based Office Suites (AllBusiness)
Back in the mid-1990s, office suites were a hot new idea. Just about every business wanted in on the action-and every business had to begin by choosing between Microsoft Office, Lotus SmartSuite, and WordPerfect. Nobody liked to admit it, but all three products were pretty darn similar, in part because they all borrowed each other’s best features. And then Microsoft came to dominate the market, and most companies stopped pondering which suite to get. For better or worse, they bought the same one everyone else did: Office.
Ballmer: Bing Is About Verbs, Not Just Nouns (SFGate)
Steve Ballmer gave an unusually crisp explanation today of why Microsoft continues to throw billions down the hole into Bing. In short: computers today are good at helping people FIND stuff. They’re not so good at helping them DO stuff. So there’s huge opportunity in figuring out what people want and helping them do it — and investing in search technology is the best way to capture that opportunity.
Six Questions Board Members Should Ask About Social Media Usage (Boardmember)
The old adage used to go, “You can run but you can’t hide.” In the age of social media, you can’t even run. Headlines in the last few weeks have been replete with stories exposing social media scandals—from the pathologically bizarre behavior of Congressman Anthony Weiner exposing private body parts on Twitter, to the embarrassing and expensive calamity of Sony exposing some 100 million personal accounts on its PlayStation Network. Whether the consequence is the toppling of a political career or the stumble of a share price, the impact on trust and confidence can be catastrophic. Not surprisingly, social media is becoming an issue for discussion in the House and in the Boardroom.

Data Storage Changes for SharePoint 2010 (Data Storage Changes for SharePoint 2010)
Today we are announcing two related changes to the way we describe data storage in SharePoint. First, by taking advantage of performance and reliability improvements in SP1 and by defining specific requirements for large data storage in SharePoint, Microsoft is able to increase the supported limits for data storage in SharePoint. Additionally, we are announcing that the SQL Server FILESTREAM RBS provider is now supported for use with SharePoint so that lower cost iSCSI connected NAS disk can be used. This post outlines the new data storage support limits and guidelines for scaling to those limits and it defines RBS including the new FILESTREAM RBS provider.
SharePoint 2010, Mobility, Browser Compatibility, Compliance, and its Continued Dominance in the Marketplace (AIIM)
Like a stock trader who has purchased a “put” on a stock in hopes the stock value will decrease, I continue to see articles and blogs every now and then asking questions and making statements on doubts about how long SharePoint can remain dominant or how it will adopt to the ever changing mobile world. Also these folks question how SharePoint 2010 can meet compliance and eDiscovery challenges or replace Documentum, LiveLink, FileNet, or other ECM\ERM systems.
How Long Should You Spend on Requirements Gathering? (The SharePoint Blog)
Estimating how long a project will take to complete is a complex task, with hundreds of books and articles having be written about the various techniques and methods of getting it right. I’d like to look at a different slightly angle, that of how long you should spend on requirements gathering in any given project.
Planning and Designing Service Application Architecture – Part 1 (SharePointEduTech)
In the 2nd SharePoint Saturday Vietnam, I was honored to speak about how to plan and design Service Application Architecture in order to meet business requirement. This topic focused on the new capabilities of Service Application, which kicked Share Service Provider out of SharePoint 2010 and then “attacked” the design of logical Service Application architecture. I had intended to write the basic of this process after finished speaking there, I haven’t had time to do what my expectation is calling me until now.
The SharePoint 2010 4TB Content Database Limit Fine Prints – Just a Warning! (Wictor Wilén)
I guess by now we all seen or read about the new SharePoint 2010 guidance on scaling limits announced by the product group today. To sum it up it this is the new guidance on content database sizing:
