I am a fan of corporate “informational” videos as much as the next guy (yawn), but this Gmail Man video did get a chuckle out of me. Happy Friday and have a great weekend.  –Chris

Inside SharePoint 2010, Part 2: Internet Web Sites (SuperSite For Windows)
SharePoint is widely lauded for its sites-based intranet and extranet capabilities, which allow users to share virtually anything with coworkers, partners, and others. Less well known, however, is SharePoint’s related functionality for managing and publishing publically-facing Internet web sites. And even those who have explored this area in the past will find that SharePoint 2010 (and SharePoint Online, part of Office 365) has dramatically improved Internet site capabilities, in response to customer requests. This isn’t your father’s SharePoint.

A Closer Look at Browser-Based Microsoft 365 (MSNBC)
For all their potential, cloud-based application services such as Google Docs can still be downright spartan when it comes to software features. Yes, their cost is low or free in most cases, and their easy-to-use collaboration tools provide small businesses with a good first step toward building a mobile or remote workforce. But the feature sets of browser-based services still pale in comparison to full software suites such as Microsoft Office, which provides a wealth of tools and virtually endless customization of documents.

Browser Wars: Chrome vs. IE9 vs. Firefox (PC Magazine)
Web browsers are converging. Since the arrival of Google Chrome nearly three years ago, all browsers have come under its influence, and they’ve all moved in the same three-pronged directions—speedier page loading, cleaner user interfaces, and greater support for new Web standards. All of the major browsers—Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera—have made significant strides in each of these three dimensions. The first two qualities are pretty much universally desirable, but the “standards” support piece, while also desirable, gets sticky: Each browser seems to support a different subset of the many features that fall under the label HTML5. All you have to do is check out each browser’s HTML5 demo site. Apple’s HTML5 demos, for example, flat out won’t function unless you’re browsing with Safari. So much for “standards.”

Why Microsoft Can’t — and Shouldn’t — Give Up on Bing (Wired)
In two years, Microsoft’s Bing has doubled its share of the U.S. search market, from 7.2 percent to 14.4 percent. If you add Yahoo’s Bing-powered portal, it’s 27 percent. So why are loud voices clamoring for Microsoft to give up on search? Bing’s Online Services Division doesn’t make money. Shortly after Microsoft released its quarterly earnings results, ZDNet’s Larry Dignan called the OSD an “online sinkhole,” noting that the division last turned a profit in 2006 and had lost $8.5 billion over nine years. Last year, it lost a record $2.56 billion.

The Social Enterprise: An Interview with NewsGator (WindowsITPro)
Social media use in the enterprise has been a hot topic lately, and a number of vendors have developed platforms and services to provide the benefits of social media to a corporate setting. I’ve written a bit about this topic in the past, and growth and interest in the “social enterprise” has soared over the last few years. A recent survey conducted by the International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed that 41% of survey respondents in IT indicated that they were exploring social business initiatives.

Faster is Better With Google’s Page Speed Service, Currently on Free Trial (CMSWire)
Website loading speed is often a big issue with web publishers. Performance is dependent on a lot of factors — traffic, server load, compression, size of the content and the like. Google wants to help webmasters take the load off their minds (and wallets) with an optimization service called Page Speed Service.

Around the Blogosphere
Navigating the World of SharePoint 2010 and All it Encompasses – Part 1 (AIIM)
Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is one of the most popular software programs \ platforms in history and with it has come a community with a near cult following as well as a large number of extremely powerful products that can integrate with it and continue to allow it to be tailored to your organization’s specific business needs. For a CIO or IT Director new to the world of SharePoint I can’t imagine the questions they must may have as the blogosphere \ web can provide them with a fantastic amount of free information (correct and unbelievably incorrect), but it is key to consider the source. Is this person that authored the article 2 years into SharePoint and on their 1st or 2nd deployment or an administrator within their company in a very specific environment meant to meet a specific need of their organization or a true SharePoint expert or just an SharePoint trainer speaking in theory.

A Dummies Guide to SharePoint and jQuery–Getting Started (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
I have several conferences coming up where I’ll be talking about jQuery and best practices around deployment, maintenance, and performance tuning in SharePoint and I find that I never have enough time to talk about everything I’d like. So I thought I’d write a few blogs about the subject from a complete beginners standpoint. After all, we were all beginners once and nothing frustrates me more than finding a solution to a problem, but then having no idea how to implement it.

My Experience Upgrading SharePoint with FAB 40 (SharePoint Joel’s SharePoint Land)
So, I had been wrestling with error after error from templates that were missing, features, event receivers, and web templates and web parts. Seems like most of our upgrade was time spent wrestling with these things. I had really no idea how they were being used. I just knew we were using 7 of the server admin templates. First thing I did was go and look at Khalil’s 2010 Fab 40 list. I figured as long as I could match them up I would be fixed by simply installing the applicable template on the 2010 side. This was not the case. While we had no problem adding the solutions from Khalil’s blog, we found that none of our errors were addressed by adding them. Apparently Khalil’s list is for people who are looking to have new working copies of the Fab 40. This is nearly the opposite of what I was looking for. I simply wanted my sites to upgrade, and to deprecate the FAB 40 features such that no one would be able to create new sites based on them. I’ve been thinking Khalil’s work would help with upgrade, not so…

Part B: To Brand or Not To Brand SharePoint? … Why is This The Question?
Bringing up this topic always seems to invite strong opinions for, but mainly against, however I’m feeling game today… Before we go on, let me just take a moment to define branding, because various conversations over the years have made me aware this term can mislead and confuse business clients; or anyone, really, who doesn’t spend their lives thinking about such things.
