The Right Way to Approach SharePoint 2010 (CMSWire)
SharePoint 2010 is like the Swiss army knife for information management. It is a versatile platform with capabilities covering many areas of information management, from publishing and document management to business intelligence and collaboration. However, just as you can cut yourself on a knife, there are ways you can either cut yourself on SharePoint 2010. In other words, there are ways to fail even with a capable and modern platform as SharePoint in your hands, and whether you will fail is determined by how you approach it.

Backing Up SharePoint 2010 Content, Configurations, and Components (SQL Server Magazine)
Backing up and restoring SharePoint 2010 databases, content, and configurations can be a complex endeavor. Microsoft has made some significant improvements to the native tools, including the addition of features that let administrators back up an entire farm configuration, an individual web application, an individual site collection, or even specific content. In addition, administrators can now connect to unattached content databases and restore content from them. With that said, it isn’t immediately obvious which backup and restore tools are best for which situations and how to use them. So, I’ll first shed some light on the available backup and restore tools, then concentrate on the tools with which administrators should be familiar.

How Lotus Notes Changed the Collaboration Landscape (ReadWriteEnterprise)
Sheldon Laube has been around tech for decades, holding executive positions at leading consulting firms and working most notably at Price Waterhouse Coopers these last few years as chief innovation officer. I caught up with him this week and recorded a short podcast interview that you listen to here. I spoke with him about his thoughts about collaboration and social media and how things have changed over the decades with these tools.

Gmail Now Credible Rival to Microsoft Exchange: Gartner (eWeek)
Google’s Gmail application commands only 1 percent market email market share in the enterprise, but that’s enough for Gartner to proclaim the application has become a credible competitor to Microsoft Exchange Online and other Web-based email services, proclaimed Gartner. Gmail is the search-engine provider’s cloud-computing messaging software, which became a household application in July 2009 after five years in beta.

Cloud Migration Won’t Happen Overnight (SYS-CON Media)
There is a massive difference between migrating some code to the cloud and migrating an entire application to the cloud. Yes, the heart of any application is indeed its codebase, but code can’t execute without data and there lies the biggest challenge of any cloud migration. “No problem,” you say. “We can just move our database to the cloud and our code will be able to access it.” Sounds great, apart from most storage services in the cloud tend to run on cheap disk which is often virtualized and shared across several tenants. It’s no secret that databases store and access data from disk; the problem these days is that disks have got bigger and cheaper, but they haven’t exactly got much faster. The assumption that Cloud will offer your application a better Quality of Service (QoS) at a cheaper price is therefore not always true when you include application tiers that manage data. Your code might run faster with cheaper and elastic computing power, but it can only go as fast as the data which it retrieves and processes.

BUILD 2011: Windows Azure Tackles the ‘One True Login’ Puzzle (ReadWriteCloud)
This could be a nightmare: another ReadWriteWeb story about “Facebook login.” Actually, we’re being serious: The way security is ensured in any modern operating system is by authenticating the user, and certifying that processes are only run by certified sources. If cloud services are to play the role of application servers, then every online transaction will need to be certified. And we are far from that point.

Windows 8: Ballmer’s Vindication or Damnation (TechNewsWorld)
One of the biggest things that separates losers from winners is the tendency to spend what they think the effort is worth and not first find out what it would cost to ensure success. A lot of large companies fail not because they don’t have the potential for success, but because they are doing too many things and can’t afford to properly fund all of them. The result is they don’t properly fund any.

How to Customize a Grouped View in the Data View Web Part (Me & My SharePoint Designer)
How about to use a Data View Web Part (DWWP) to display a grouped view of news pages by year and month? Let’s improve the findability and give the users a simply way to browse the news pages in a news archive page. This technique could be useful for any kind of item in a list; you could for example do the same to display documents from a library or items in an announcement list.

SharePoint 2010 Posters / Technical Diagrams (Asif’s Blog)
Have you seen the SharePoint 2010 posters by Microsoft? They are especially helpful if you are in one of the following roles: SharePoint Administrator; SharePoint Developer; SharePoint Governance Guru (or a Governance team member); A Business User (asked/forced to act like a SharePoint Expert in the company); “The SharePoint Guy/Gal” at your company. Imagine having a bunch of reference charts you can put up in your office or cubicle that guide you with a specific need or role like Governance, Services available in SharePoint, Authentication models, Farm Topologies, Search mechanisms, SharePoint Databases and more. Of course, they are all available from Microsoft at no-cost.

Delivering Business Applications with SharePoint Composites: Don’t Get Stuck! (Point Beyond)
Suppose that you are in New York and you want to come to my house. You could look at a map of the world that has New York and my house marked on it. Looking at the map you can see that London Heathrow airport is pretty close to my house. So you think, hey that’s cool I’ll fly over. You pay for your flight, tell me what time you are arriving, and tell your wife/husband/partner how much it costs. Sorted. Easy.

How Can I Save a Custom View and Reuse it in Another Document Library? (ITPro)
A question came up about how to save a custom View for use in another document library, so I decided to play around with it some to see what I could come up with for a solution to this. Basically, what I’ve found is that there appears to be two ways to approach this: First, you can do the “Save library as a template” option which will copy over any custom views you have…which sounds simple enough for creating any new libraries, but what about if you have an existing library? How do we get the view transferred over?

Process Automation = Paranoia (AIIM)
Demand for process automation is rapidly increasing as organizations struggling to compete in a stressed economy work to survive and hopefully grow. The concept of process automation is a sound direction to take and will provide beneficial results ranging from cost reduction to increased efficiency for the organization as a whole yet at the same time, potentially create a sense of angst in the employee base. This angst of course is the sense that process automation will eliminate jobs, which is not always the case and should be communicated.
